Sy's given me his old Pocket PC, a HP Jornada 568. Well, I say old, as it's really only a couple of years old. But in the fast moving world of handheld's they're practically obsolete the minute you buy one these days.
It doesn't work, resetting itself when you remove it from the docking station, and refusing to acknowledge the back-up battery.
So, today, I took the daring move and peeled off the "WARRANTY VOID" sticker. After the smoke had cleared, and I'd washed off the security paint that had sprayed out all over my hands, I had a good look around. A stud that appears to make earth to the case was snapped, a common problem if the threads on some of the support forums are to be believed. So, a quick attempt to fix it back on to the motherboard and it appears to work. Or, at least, it's a little more stable than before. I can now take it out of the docking station and wander around the house with it. I'm still not convinced it'll not suddenly reset, so a further disection may be in order later in the week.
The backup battery? Well, it looks like I'd put it in upside down, whoops!
