If my legs were longer...

My manager asked me how my weekend went today. Here's my response:

I got beaten up by my brothers during a particular violent game of piggy in the middle, but aside from that it was fine.
By way of explanation, I feel I should state my cries that piggy in the middle is intended as a non-contact sport went unheeded. Also, my three brothers have, at a minimum a 3 inch height and 25% weight advantage over me. Suffice it to say when myself and any of my brothers found ourselves racing towards the ball, the laws of physics ensured I usually fared somewhat poorly in the resulting collisions. But, bruises aside, it was all in good fun.

On Saturday I spent some time atop Salisbury Crags, admiring the view over the city. I'd intended to head up to the top of Arthur's Seat, but it seemed rather crowded up the there and being in a reflective mood I contented myself with wandering over the crags instead, admiring the views of the city. I really can't express how dearly I love the shape and sight of Edinburgh. On a fantastically warm summers day, I sat at the very edge of the crags, looked out at the city and felt genuinely glad to be here.

Oh, and, I also emailed someone I vaguely knew at university whom I haven't had any contact with or thought much about in over a dozen years on nothing more than a whim. I'm curious as to whether I'll get any response.

It was random sort of weekend.

Hi Mark - if your legs were longer ... reminds me of my dear departed Mum who would say plaintively (while watching racing), "Oh, what a shame - if the race had been 1/2 a furlong longer, number 6 would have won". Such is life! I have a favour for your trusty readers. Two years ago when I visited you, I said I was planning to make a CD of songs which I a) dearly loved and b) made me happy. This is the first time I've gotten around to it! Suggestions, please. So far, I have John Hiatt (Have a Little Faith in Me), Bon Jove (Blame it on the Love of Rock'n'Roll - yes, I was a teenage poodle-popper), Paul Simon (Call me Al) and Peter Gabriel (In your eyes). What songs make you happy?

"Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina & The Waves. Why? It involves pretty much all of my best friends, a dolphin tank, and a sort of can-can chorus line :-)

Hmm, music. I'm probably not the best person to ask, primarily because, although I'm quite fond of my taste in music, I think many people would sooner commit various types of bodily harm rather than listen to what's in my cd collection. Do recall that I have goodly number of Disney cd's buried in there after all. Still I've had a quick look over what's in there and what I've *cough* downloaded and here are a few songs that make me happy. Note that I make no apology for anything that follows:

Anything from the Amelie soundtrack, Jose Gonzales - Heartbeats, Nizlopi - JCB Song, the flying theme from ET, The Proclaimers - 500 Miles, Aha - Take On Me/The Sun Always Shines On Tv, Popcorn (almost any version), Beethoven - Ode To Joy, Rossini - Barber of Seville, The theme from Black Beauty, Blondie - Maria/Heart of Glass, Bon Jovi - Living on a Prayer, Boston - More than a feeling, Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's, Cat Stevens - Wind of my Soul, Churchills - Everybody Gets What They Deserve, Saint-Sans - Aquarium, Colin Hay - Overkill, Diana Ross - Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - Doll on a Music Box, Dionne Warwick - I Say a Little Prayer, Gary Jules - Mad World, The theme from The Mission, What a Feeling from Flashdance, I Am Kloot - No Fear Of Falling, Cirque De Soleil - Allegria, Kendall Payne - Modern Day Moses, Princes Bride Soundtrack - Storybook Love, Songs For a New World - Stars and the Moon, Les Miserable - One Day More, Little Shop Of Horrors - Just about all of it, Nightmare Before Christmas - What's This?, The Muppets - Mahna Mahna, M People - Search for the Hero, Marc Cohn - Walking in Memphis, Marillion - Cover my Eyes, Monkees - Last Train To Clarksville/I'm a Believer, Moulin Rouge - The Elephant Love Medley, Pirates Of Penzance - Modern Major General, Nick Kershaw - The Riddle, The Pogues - Fairy Tale of New York, Anastasia soundtrack - At the Beginning, Polyphonic Spree - Light and Day (or Reach For the Sun, I can't remember the proper name), REM - The Great Beyond/Man in the Moon, Red Hot Chilli Peppers - The Zephyr Song, Savage Garden - Affirmation, Shakira - Whenever Wherever, Richard Marx - Wherever you Go, Rolph Harris - The Court of King Caractacus/Two Little Boys, Simon & Garfunkel - Cecilia, Suzanne Vega - Tom's Diner, Thomas Crown Affair soundtrack - Glider (parts 1 & 2), U2 - One, Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles/Ordinary Day, The Bluebells - Young at Heart, Zoe - Sunshine on a Rainy Day.

But more to the point, has it really been two years since I saw you last? Good grief. Right, I'm definitely coming out to visit this year. Accept no excuses!

P.S Dolphin tanks. I have no idea what he's talking about and deny everything categorically. Please contact my lawyers if you want to discuss the matter any further.

I have pictures. Of that AND the prarie dogs.

Heh heh.

Dolphins AND prairie dogs? Kinky. And finally, I can admit freely to Aha Take on Me - and Nickers Shaw (Nick Kershaw?) Wow! I'd almost forgotten ... boy, I've got a lot of catching up to do, musically. The thing about bringing up small childrens is that you tend not to have lots of spare cash to splash out on luxuries like books and music (my personal philosophy is that these are necessities, however my children are supremely unimpressed by my personal philosophies). So, finally now I can buy one song at a time from iTunes or whatever. I bribe myself by doing 2 extra hours of work a day per song. Now I have lots more suggestions ... thank you! Katrina and the Waves - did't they actually win the beloathed Eurovision with that one?

Posted by: Foots at June 15, 2006 02:52 PM

According that tome of all things accurate (ahem), the Wikipedia, their Eurovision win was actually a whopping 12 years later with "Love Shine a Light".

You know, that's the kind of information I really wish I didn't know, even temporarily.

Oh, I should also cast a vote for "500 Miles" by the Proclaimers. This time it only involves an all-women's college gradation ball, a kilt, and some very very polished, some might argue reflective, patent shoes :-P

Eeeeeeeeuuuuwww!

Posted by: Foots at June 16, 2006 10:25 AM

For the sake of the mental health of all my gentle readers I feel it my duty to impress upon you that although the evidence of my involvement with the aforementioned dolphins and prarie dogs is clear and irrefutable (and unfortunately photographic), my presence was in no way complicit with any kilt/graduation/500 Miles incidents.

This has been a public service announcement.

Jumping back to the subject of music for a moment, I realised I've left out one of my all time favourite feel good songs: Birdhouse In Your soul - They Might Be Giants
