- - something to do with printing? I seem to recognise Widows and Orphans - - but I've been sorting ancient junk today so my brain has turned to mush.

they are.
gutter - a space between two columns of text
bleed - when an image goes right to the edge of the page, and indeed is printed over the edge to be cut off later in production
widow - a word left by itself on a line of justified text
shadow - heavy lines on the side of letterforms to make them appear 3D
dagger - a symbol to indicate a footnote
ragged - unjustified text
orphan - see widow [never can remember the difference]
