Synthetic twang

Just what you don’t want – synthetic twang – when painting a surface, like a panelled door. What you do want is the soft give of a natural bristle. Preferably a long thick bristle for good pick-up and laying on, a feathered end for laying off and a chiselled edge for cutting in.

It’s getting harder and harder to find natural bristle paint brushes – the brushes that go thoop as you reach the end of the cross-stroke not twang.

The vibration resulting from the twang of these crude nylon bristles continues up the handle and makes the job seem like painting a balloon half-filled with jelly.
