Sticky Storytape
What works and what doesn’t work? Well what seems to work while shooting, doesn’t always work in the edit. Just as what works in the script doesn’t always work on the shoot.
You make three films. The first is the film you conceive and write, the second is the film you shoot and the third is the one you put together in the edit. This third film is, clearly, the only one people get to see.
The trouble with putting a film together in the edit is that sometimes there are bits you need, to make sense of a plot-line, and they are missing – scenes that weren’t in the original script, lines that didn’t get recorded. So you have to get everyone together and go out and shoot some more. Pick-ups they are called by some [including me] and they are the little bits of sticky storytape that will hold this third film together.
