trying out new stuff

in the midst of upgrading the big grey guessing box and its accompanying chorus of new tricks [dual quad-core Intel Xeon Mac Pro, for those keen on the substance] slowly the many pieces of the digital jigsaw come together, though not always in the expected way it has to be said.

one of the ones that didn't make it

[gravely voice] In a world with only four TV channels, in a time when Saturday night entertainment regularly drew an audience of over 11 million viewers and I designed games for Gladiators, here’s one that didn’t make it:

The Strange Case of Upper Lane

This road sign has been bothering me for a while

upper-lane.jpg

Upper Lane is in upper case, except that the first letter seems to be lower case. Or so it would be in most typefaces:

But then some sifting around, in amongst the type trays, turns up a few faces where the capital U does have a spur, bottom left.

Synthetic twang

Just what you don’t want – synthetic twang – when painting a surface, like a panelled door. What you do want is the soft give of a natural bristle. Preferably a long thick bristle for good pick-up and laying on, a feathered end for laying off and a chiselled edge for cutting in.

hamilton-brush.jpg

It’s getting harder and harder to find natural bristle paint brushes – the brushes that go thoop as you reach the end of the cross-stroke not twang.

The vibration resulting from the twang of these crude nylon bristles continues up the handle and makes the job seem like painting a balloon half-filled with jelly.
